Dental disease is a common problem in horses of all ages and may cause:
- Ulceration of cheek or tongue
- Pain on eating/loss of appetitie
- Weight Loss
- Halitosis (bad breath)
- Sinusitis
- Problems with the bit
We consider that dental care is an essential part of a horses’ preventative health care. Many of our vets have extra post-graduate training and expertise in both normal and abnormal dentistry.
We recommend that teeth are checked once a year. We will advise you if a specific horse requires more frequent treatment depending on our findings. Whilst many horses will tolerate a full examination without sedation there is no doubt that in some cases a thorough examination and optimal rasping can only be done with the use of sedation. Our vets can choose and offer sedation as necessary at the time. It is illegal for dental technicians to sedate horses. Many of you will find it convienient and economic to combine a dental examination with the annual vaccinations to protect against equine influenza and tetanus.
Please see our Special Offers page details of dental clinics that we run
During the winter months we run a Healthy Horse Check, this includes a physical exam, dental check, blood sample, faecal worm count and discounted vaccinations. The most appropriate advice can them be given regarding health management and worming programmes.
